Former Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has boldly predicted that the Indian Premier League (IPL) season opener between defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) will witness a historic milestone—breaching the 300-run total mark for the first time in the tournament's history.
Ashwin's 'Mission 300' Prediction
Speaking on his YouTube channel, 'Ash Ki Baat', Ashwin expressed his conviction that the upcoming match at Bengaluru will be a turning point for high-scoring cricket. "Mission 300 is truly on. This time, I have a feeling from within that the 300-run mark will be crossed," Ashwin stated. He attributed this potential record-breaking performance to three key factors: batting-friendly wickets, explosive batting line-ups, and weak bowling units.
- Key Players: RCB's Virat Kohli, Phil Salt, Travis Head, and Abhishek Sharma form a power-packed batting unit.
- SRH Threat: SRH's lineup includes Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, known for their aggressive approach.
- Historical Context: The last time these teams met at Bengaluru, SRH posted a record 287/3, while RCB chased down 262/7.
IPL's Evolution into a Run-Fest
Over the last three seasons, the IPL has evolved into a high-scoring tournament, with several batting records and powerplay records being broken. The introduction of the 'Impact Player' rule has given teams more liberty to go hard from the first ball. - afhow
- 250+ Scores: A total of 12 250-plus scores have been seen in IPL so far, with only one of them coming in 2013, RCB's 263/5 against Pune Warriors India powered by a 175* from Chris Gayle.
- 2024 Edition: The 2024 edition was the harshest for bowlers, with eight 250-plus scores, reducing bowlers to being throwing machines.
- Recent Records: SRH's 286/6 against Rajasthan Royals (RR) at Hyderabad and 278/3 against Delhi Capitals at Delhi, thanks to a 39-ball 105* by Heinrich Klaasen.
Ashwin on Player Absences
Reflecting on the opening match, Ashwin highlighted the absence of two premier Australian bowlers—SRH skipper Pat Cummins and RCB's Josh Hazlewood. He emphasized that RCB needs Hazlewood more than SRH needs their skipper due to his movement, swing, death overs excellence, and experience.
"As much as SRH need Pat Cummins, RCB need Josh Hazlewood even more. Hyderabad has a lot of power in this game. When there is even a little bit of seam movement and swing, Josh Hazlewood executes excellently. Even in death, he is a guy from whom everyone can learn. It is not as if he bowls only yorkers under pressure; he bowls the hard lengths, yorkers, mixes it up. Hazlewood is not there for this game, which is a very very big loss for RCB," Ashwin said.
